Confirmation of Payee

LCU is committed to providing our members with a safe and reliable financial environment that provides transparency and support when submitting a payment through the LCU Mobile Banking App or LCU Internet Banking.

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that matches the bank account details you enter with the account details held by the recipient’s bank and displays a match outcome. It’s a new layer of protection for Australian consumers and businesses when they’re making a payment to a BSB and account number.

Check The Name, Before You Pay

Why does it matter?

Confirmation of Payee can help safeguard people and businesses from fraud, scams, and mistaken payments, and help protect your money. It provides confidence that the details entered match the details held by the recipient’s bank. It gives banks and financial institutions another vital tool to combat fraud and scams and further builds trust when paying a BSB and account number in Australia.

How does it work?

Confirmation of Payee matches the bank account details you enter with the account details held by the recipient’s bank and displays the outcome.

This information can help you make an informed decision about what to do next – pay, check the details again or choose not to proceed with the payment altogether.

Match Outcomes

There are four possible match outcomes. Each result gives you a chance to make an informed decision about what action to take next.

Match

The account details you entered match the recipient’s account.

Close Match

The account details you entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient’s name will be displayed.

You should double-check the details before proceeding.

No Match

The account details you entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient. The recipient’s name will not be displayed unless it is a business or government organisation.

Check with the recipient before proceeding to help avoid mistaken payments, which can be difficult to recover.

Error

The service could not confirm the account details you entered match.

Check with the recipient before proceeding to help avoid mistaken payments, which can be difficult to recover.

Important:

Confirmation of Payee will never stop you from completing a payment. LCU encourages you to stay alert to scams and always confirm who you are paying, as mistaken or fraudulent payments may be difficult to recover.

FAQs

Our FAQ can help you to better understand how this affects you making payments

What is Confirmation of Payee?

Confirmation of Payee is an industry-wide service that adds a layer of protection for payments to a BSB and account number. It checks the account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank and lets you know whether it’s a match. This can help you make informed decisions before you make a payment, reducing the risk of scams and mistaken payments.

How do I activate Confirmation of Payee?

You don’t need to do anything. It is automatically available in LCU Internet Banking and the LCU Mobile Banking App. When you make a payment to a BSB and account number, or edit a payee’s account name, BSB or account number, you will be given the match result before you make a payment.

How does Confirmation of Payee work?

When you make a payment to a BSB and account number, Confirmation of Payee checks the details you enter against the account name, BSB and account number held by the recipient’s bank and gives you a match outcome. That helps you decide what you want to do next – and gives you more confidence that the money you’re paying is going where you intend it to.

How does LCU check my details?

Through the LCU Internet Banking and the LCU Mobile Banking App the Confirmation of Payee service checks the account name, BSB and account number you’ve entered against the details held by the recipient’s bank to let you know whether it’s a match or a close match – or if the details don’t match at all. All Confirmation of Payee information is passed securely between financial institutions to ensure your data remains safe.

Who can see my information when I receive money?

If you are receiving money into a personal account, the person who’s paying you will be shown the account name only if the name they have entered is a match or a close match. If any of these details are incorrect, the account name will not be shown to protect your privacy.

If you’re a business or government organisation account that’s receiving payment, the name of your account will be shown to the payer, regardless of whether it’s a match or not.

When does Confirmation of Payee check payment details?

Confirmation of Payee will check account details for all first-time payments or future dated first-time payment set up to a BSB and account number and when you make amendments to your online banking address book.

What do the match outcomes mean?

Match – The account details you entered match the recipient’s account.

Close Match - The account details you entered closely match the bank records of the intended recipient, and the recipient's name will be displayed.

You should double-check the details before proceeding.

No Match - The account details you entered do not match the bank records of the intended recipient. The recipient's name will not be displayed unless it is a business or government organisation.

Check with the recipient before proceeding to help avoid mistaken payments, which can be difficult to recover.

Error – The service could not confirm the account details you entered match.

Check with the recipient before proceeding to help avoid mistaken payments, which can be difficult to recover.

Can I still make the payment whatever the match outcome?

Yes. Confirmation of Payee will never stop you from completing a payment. We encourage you to be scam aware and always take steps to make sure you know who you are paying, as scams or mistaken payments may be difficult to retrieve.

What information should I share when I want to receive payments?

If you want to get paid without any confusion or potential delays, you should provide the account name, BSB, and account number exactly as recorded by LCU. This includes using the correct spelling and any middle names that form part of your account name. If you’re uncertain, it’s best to check these details with your LCU staff.

This is also relevant for businesses whose account name may differ from their trading name, such as when a specific part of the business operates under a different name.

Your account details can be found on your statement, in the LCU Mobile Banking App or LCU Internet Banking.

What should I do when a name has special characters (‘, -, or &)?

Names with special characters, like apostrophes (‘), will still match without being entered. For example, enter “O’Brien” as “O Brien” or “Obrien”. Or an account name with an ampersand (&) such as Paper & Pen can be entered as Paper Pen.

The account number field won’t accept the full account number, what do I do?

If the account number you're entering exceeds the character limit in your online banking and the account number you are entering starts with zeros, you can remove the zeros and check those account details match. If you're still unsure, let the recipient know and contact LCU.

What’s a mistaken payment?

If you enter the wrong account details, you can end up sending your money to the wrong recipient. This can be difficult and time-consuming to resolve, which is why it’s important to check the accuracy of the details you enter before you send your money.

Does Confirmation of Payee work for BPAY or direct debits?

No. Confirmation of Payee only applies when you're setting up or editing payees using an account name, BSB and account number.

BPAY® is a registered trademark of BPAY Pty Ltd ABN 69 079 137 518

Can I opt out of having my name displayed?

Eligible members may request to be opted-out of the Confirmation of Payee service. This means your account name and match outcome will not be displayed to payers and could impact the likelihood of the payer proceeding with the payment. To understand the opt out process and the implications, please contact LCU.

I received an email or text message from Confirmation of Payee - is it legitimate?

The Confirmation of Payee service is managed by LCU, your financial institution. Confirmation of Payee will never contact you directly about Confirmation of Payee. That means any message from Confirmation of Payee asking you to send money or receive money is a scam.

If you believe you have been scammed, please contact LCU and report it to the police.
